Here is the Christmas miracle: (stolen from Sister Lawrence's letter, I didn't feel like writing it out)

"On Thursday (december 19), we finally contacted a referral from the elders: Mindy and her two boys Triston (12) and Dillon (10). For the last month and a half, they have been coming to church most Sundays with a friend who recently moved into the ward (Vivian). Vivian is a colorful character with a pretty interesting back story. After she walked into by accident a drug deal that involved a few local authorities, she fled Alabama to Georgia . Leaving behind all of her belongings and quitting her job as a private chef and cleaning lady.Mindy also has a few of her own series of unfortunate events, and has been recuperating in a domestic violence retreat at the South end of town. She is now in a "hope" house (has graduated from the retreat home) and is currently in transition. The elders several weeks ago told us about Mindy, but with other details in the mix we hadn't gotten around to seeing her. On Thursday though we dropped off some Christmas presents from the angel tree our ward did to Vivian's. While we were at Vivian's we asked a few questions about Mindy to gather a little bit more information. In the end, we exchanged information and planned on calling Mindy ourselves. She beat us to the punch though and called us later that evening to set up a time the next day that she would be around. That evening we walked into their apartment and just started talking to them. We asked a few questions about how church has been the last few weeks and if they enjoy coming. Both boys without hesitation (especially Dillon:) said that they love it. Mindy told us that the one week they missed church they had a tough time making ends meet and Tristan told her it was because they missed church. Sister Koenig and I at this point are already looking at each other like "is this for real?"-- we couldn't stop smiling. We probably hadn't even been there for five minutes and Mindy started talking about things they had already discussed and talked about, like the Word of Wisdom or Joseph Smith. She then turned the conversation and said, " Ya, they have already been asking me when we can get baptized." Dylan was up and about at this time and started calling out, "ya! bath--matized!" So this Sunday they are preparing for baptism. The next day we saw them to talk about some of the "big" boundaries (Word of Wisdom, Law of Chasity). A week and a half is too good to be true, but no problems so far."

So that is basically what happened. Everything happened so fast and they understood everything that we were teaching them. Mindy absolutely loved the outfit that we got her for Christmas and we were able to talk to people in the ward to find some clothes for the boys. The baptism was good.. and a little stressful. We made the baptismal program during sunday school and then during relief society a sister pulled us out to tell us that no one had started filling the font!! We had just talked to the Ward mission leader before church and he said that he would do it but apparently he forgot. It was such a miracle that the font filled in 30 minutes! It was a really good baptism. We stood at the top of the stairs at the back of the font with Mindy and watched all three get baptized. I couldn't stop smiling and neither could they. Dillon went first and as he was coming up the stairs he said, quite loudly, "That felt GOOD!" They were all so happy and when Mindy got out she told us how happy she was and that she felt like a whole new person. Then sister lawrence and I  picked a song as we were walking back into the room that the baptism was and sang " Teach me to walk in the light." We didn't realize it until after we had sung it that it was the closing song, so we got to sing it twice! It was pretty funny. I lead the music and sang the closing prayer too.

Toya was at the baptism and she said she felt the spirit. She is so excited to get baptized this Sunday. I have never seen anyone study as much as she does. We will be teaching a lesson and she will make a comment and quote a BoM scripture. It's so cool! And in church she was participating and knew exactly what we were talking about because she has been studying the gospel principles book. I'm excited for her! 

Kristin is still doing okay, but her family was sick yesterday, so they didn't come to church. Hopefully we can see her this week. Celeste is still gone. But we're excited to see her when she gets back.

We did service for a lady that rescues and boards animals this week. She has SEVENTY cats and dogs at her house. We had to give them baths. It was the worst service that anyone could have ever made me do. I do NOT like animals. At all. But it was pretty funny and Sister Lawrence kept laughing at me trying to give a great dane a bath. 

I just talked to you a few days ago, so I don't feel like I have much else to say. I really like the mormon message "Look not behind thee" I could watch it over and over again. Everyone go watch it. I'm so thankful for the atonement and know that it truly can change us. My mission is really helping me to see that. Our future really can, and should be, better than our past. Even though I miss things and people I know that this is where I need to be and that I have a lot to look forward to.

December 23, 2013

This was the best week of my mission so far! So many good things happened. I'm sad that I'm not with y'all doing fun family Christmas things, but this is so much better here. People here really take care of me. Celeste got Sis. Lawrence and I Christmas presents and so did the Vespuccis grandma, and we only met her once at dinner over there! (Remind me to tell you the story over skype) 

Kristin went out of town so we didn't get to meet with her but she came to the relief society Christmas party! And she has been texting us for scriptures to read and asking questions. It's exciting! 

On Thursday, after district meeting all the sisters went to chik-fil-a. One of the employees, Latoya, told us that she had a Mormon friend and was curious about the church. She was in Sis. Lawrence and I's area so we got her info and met with her again the next day. We didn't get to talk about much but we just let her know that she can know for herself if the church is true. The next day she came on a church tour and we taught her lesson 1 in the chapel, she said she felt all warm and fuzzy. On sunday she came to church!! She had a really good time and went caroling with us, the elders, and another couple last night (Ask me about that on Wednesday too) She texts us questions all the time too and loves the Book of Mormon. But this isn't even the best thing that happened last week!

Send me pictures. My new bed is really good. Celeste and Melanie are doing okay. I'm really looking forward to when they can come to church. 

Saturday was a really good day and we helped a member of the ward bake cookies, played soccer with the missionaries and some investigators, and helped someone wrap christmas gifts for ward members that don't have anything. 

This week we were teaching a less active old black lady and while I was talking about the sabbath, I look over and she is outtt! She started snoring and I just looked at Sister Lawrence and started dying laughing. We didn;t really know what to do so we tried talking really loud and slamming our books down, but she was dead asleep so we just got up and left. As we left she finally woke up and mumbled something about thanks for coming. It was really funny. 

I decided that I am going to make you wait until Christmas to hear about my Christmas miracle. Muahahaha. So now you have something to look forward to!! :) It's going to be worth the wait. You won't believe it! 

Read Alma 24:10. We should be so grateful for the gift of the atonement and that we can repent. And watch the mormon message "the reason behind CHristmas" ...I can't remember if I already told you about that one or not. But it's really good.

In response to email: The musical numbers went well. I didn't mess up too bad on the violin and O come all ye faithful with the other missionaries sounded okay. My talk actually went really well. I was super nervous to give it because usually when I give talks I have to read it but I was able to speak for ten whole minutes with just a few notes! I guess it's just one of the perks of being a missionary. The ward party was good, not as many people as we had hoped showed up that we invited but we still ha d a few there. Things are going great with Kristin (Gray)! She always writes down questions to ask us and wants to know more. She told us that she feels good whenever she is around us and can't stop thinking about what we have taught her. Last night we had another lesson with her and it went so well! She had more questions for us and shared with us some verses that stood out to her while reading the Book of Mormon. She also told us that she was anxious to find out what happens next to Nephi and his family. I'm so happy that she is excited about reading the Book of Mormon. We invited her to pray about the Book of Mormon this week, so hopefully she gets an answer.

We didn't get to meet with Celeste and Melanie last week, but we are seeing them tonight, so we'll see how it goes. They are always visiting family on the weekends and Celeste is going to her Dad's for Christmas. How was Vegas? And that's exciting that Kennedy and Andrew will be there soon. How long are they going to stay? And I already told you about the mission CHristmas party,(We had a mission christmas party in Jacksonville. It was really fun. Every zone did something in a talent show. My zone did a skit "Twas the night before baptism" It was really funny. Then we had a big dinner and then a christmas music program. It was really good.) but it was really fun. Another set of sisters is serving in the 2 ward and we rode down to Jacksonville with them. They are a lot of fun and we listened to David Archuletta's christmad cd the whole way. Am I allowed to open the package you are sending at all? Or don't open any of it until Christmas? 

I have heard from Alonzo, Hadley, and Skye, but not Logan for a few weeks. Have you heard anything from Loni? 

Some interesting things about the south that I found out this week: A LOT of people don't think they need to go to church and just watch preachers on T.V. Also, a lot of people tell us they've been saved so they aren't interested. Their loss.

 

We met some kids outside (15 yrs) and found out that they just moved from alabama and that they had been meeting with the missionaries every week , so we are excited to start teaching them! 

People in the ward are so nice to us and have been giving us walmart gift cards. I spent them all today on gifts for y'all. Aren't I the best daughter ever? Also, a family knows that I love Celine Dion, so they got me her christmas CD. It was the best day ever! I don't have much time to write because we are going to Sea Island to tour some HUGE homes that a couple in our ward take care of.

In response to your email: That's cold! It has been so nice this week. Hopefully it stays this way for a while. But good news, we got a heater for our cottage! Yay! It sounds like you guys had a lot of fun this weekend. I wish that I could have been there :( It's good here, but it's getting hard to be away from home at Christmas time. Oh well, at least I'll get to skype you! That's good that you got all the Christmas decorations up. Things are going really well here. We haven't talked to the Kasons, but we're going to stop by this week and invite them to the ward Christmas party. It's on saturday night and I got roped into doing a musical number. It would be fine, BUT I HAVE TO PLAY THE VIOLIN. I haven't played in like three years, so I'm pretty rusty. It's not a solo though, thank goodness. It's "what child is this" and I'm playing violin, s. lawrence is playing the viola and a girl in the ward is playing piano. Wish me luck! Also, I have to speak on Sunday... Which I am NOT looking forward to. I'm terrible at giving talks and the Bishop just told me to talk about something from the Christmas devotional, so I don't really know what to talk about yet. Bad news about Matt, Melanie, and Celeste. They will be gone every. single. weekend. in december. Which means they can't get baptized until at least the middle of January. Ugh. We still meet with them during the week though and Celeste has been coming to YW and she really likes it.

We didn't get to do any service last week. And yes I'm budgeting.

Here are some other things that happened this week. We started teaching a less active man and his nonmember wife, the Grays. They are so sweet and feed us every time we have a lesson with them. We taught her about the restoration and on the second lesson we invited her to be baptized on December 29th. She said possibly, but she was a little taken aback. The less active grandparents were at the lesson too and apparently didn't like that we asked her so early. So hopefully she doesn't listen to what the grandparents are saying, because we are just doing our job. We are supposed to invite to be baptized on the first lesson. I still think that things are going well with her though. We meet with her again on Wednesday. So hopefully she is still really interested. 

Also we found a new investigator when knocking doors. We said a prayer that we would find someone and we did! She had been to temple square 40 years ago and had a great experience. She also said that she has a BoM and has been wanting to read it for a while, but hasn't gotten around to it. So we are going back this week to talk to her about it. Miracles! The lord really does put people in our paths! 

We also started teaching two black girls, Ruby and Nakia. They are really interested and want to know more, so hopefully our lessons go well with them and they come to the Christmas party! 

I ate fried catfish this week. I'm definitely in the south. 

I think that's all. Oh, one day we were saying a prayer with an old black lady and S. Lawrence finished the prayer so I opened my eyes and started to stand up and the lady just starts praying! I look over and sister lawrence and we started laughing so hard but I just closed my eyes and sat back down while she finished the prayer. It was so weird! 

The christmas devotional was really good last night. I really liked everything they said. This week watch the mormon message "the reason behind christmas" and think about what YOU are going to give to the savior.

Sorry, I didn't take very many pictures this week... But the first one is in the front yard of an old lady that we've been teaching. She lives right on the marsh and it's really pretty. This week we went to St. Simons Island to watch some ward members perform Handels "messiah" I wish that I would have taken pictures but it was SO pretty!! The roads to the church were in a tunnel of trees with spanish moss hanging down.  It was so nice out this week.  It did not feel like december this week!

My week was really good. It went by really fast. Thanksgiving was pretty good too. It was nice to spend time with families. Even if it wasn't my own. Everyone is so nice and takes care of us here. They fed us so much, and apparently it's a normal thing here in the south to have to-go-boxes because we got some food to take home from each house.

 Bad news with the Kasons: They canceled again and she told us that her husband isn't comfortable with us coming over anymore. It makes me so sad!! She told us that we could still stop by when he's not there.. but we'll see how that goes. Angie and her two boys were supposed to get baptized on Sunday, but she hasn't quit smoking yet and hasn't been to church in a while. It's so frustrating! Melanie invited us to come help them decorate their Christmas tree, so I'm really excited for that. They should be staying in town on the weekends now, so hopefully they will start coming to church again. They are still both waiting on an answer about the book of mormon. 

We went on exchanges this week. I went with Sister Ashcraft this time. She is really nice. We didn't have any set appointments, so we went to contact a referral. We didn't know until we got there, but it was in the really bad part of town. It was dark and there were a lot of shady people walking around, so we decided to go back in the day. While we were there we decided to visit some members that live downtown in the projects. The visits went well but the walk to our car was scary and people were staring at us and I thought I was going to get shot.  I guess there is a reason why that is the Elder's area and not ours.

So there is this less active black lady that we have been meeting with and she is legit crazy. And she has a mustache. Every time we go over there I have to try so hard not to laugh! She was telling us this week that she is a fashion model for God and Jesus and a singer and a minister for them too. That's how she gets all of her nice clothes and pays her bills...because Jesus pays her for being a fashion model for him. Oh my gosh. I was dying. But she has faith and is a wonderful child of God! Hahaha

Last night we went to a Genesis Devotional with some less active members. It was in Jacksonville and is a devotional for black mormons. They had a gospel choir and we sang and clapped along to "Go Tell it on the Mountain" "Mary's Boy Child" and some other Christmas songs. I couldn't stop laughing the whole time. It was so fun! And SO different. I can't remember if it was Kara or Dana that was saying that they wanted to see/sing in a gospel choir, but they both would've loved the whole thing. It was so weird to clap in the chapel! I'm looking forward to the next one. 

Last night after the devotional it was already late and Sister Lawrence couldn't find the keys. The lady we were driving with was dropping everyone off while we sat in the car and looked for the keys. They were nowhere to be found. We reallyyy needed to find them, so I started praying that we would be able to find them. It was so weird, but as we were driving to the church I just pictured that they were in the parking lot, and I knew that was our only hope of where they could possibly be so I just kept praying that they would be there, and not somewhere in Jacksonville. We pulled up to the church and there they were! Laying on the ground in the church parking lot. It was such a cool experience and I know that Heavenly Father hears and answers our prayers.

To answer questions: We meet with Celeste, Melanie, and Mathew again tonight. They have been out of town every weekend since Matt has been home, so they haven't been coming to church. The lessons are going really well. Mathew is starting to remember why he joined the church and is remembering what the spirit feels like. Celeste and Melanie have been praying about the BOM but haven't gotten an answer yet, hopefully one comes soon! Celeste has a baptismal date for this Sunday, but we will have to postpone it because she hasn't been to church three times yet. We meet with the Cook-owens every sunday night. Her 12 year old son and 19 year old daughter have been baptized but the other two aren't old enough. Last time we met with them, Sister Cook-Owen's sister sat in for the lesson and we invited her to read and pray about the Book of Mormon, so hopefully she does! We weren't able to meet the Cason's this week, but we dropped some cookies off at their house. They are always so nice to us and we made a new appointment with them. Hopefully they don't cancel on us again. They just need to come to church! I know that once they come to church they will progress so much quicker, I just don't know how to get them there. We meet most investigators through i-netting (inspired contacting) which is where we go to a members house and then knock the houses around it. This week we were visiting a family that goes in and out of activity and we were able to meet their son (who is  less-active) and his non-member wife. They invited us over for dinner next week and we are going to start teaching her! I'm really excited!

Not too much happened this week. We helped the Woolley's, a family in the ward, pack, clean, move this week. It was fun and she really needed the help. They have six cute kids and her husband was working all day so she really appreciated our help. She gave us all of their food, which was really nice and we didn't have to buy much when we went grocery shopping. We also went to the Bishop's to make cookies and cupcakes. He texted pictures to Dad and sis lawrence's dad. Sister Lawrence's dad something super nice about how much he loves his daughter. Dad texted back "yum. thanks for the picture." It was really funny and he told everyone at ward council, so everyone thinks that my parents don't love me. Hahaha. 

I sang "Did you think to pray?" In church on Sunday. I sang with a black lady in the ward named Yolanda, and Sis L played. Her voice was WAYYYY different than mine, but it still sounded really good and we got a lot of compliments. 

I can't remember if I already told you this or not, but at the fair we met a guy that hasn't been active in ten years. We starting meeting with him and he was at church on Sunday!! He is excited for us to meet and start teaching his family when they move here in January. 

There is an old lady who everyone calls Greenie and she LOVES being with the missionaries. She comes to a lot of our appointments and took us to Olive Garden yesterday, which was the highlight of my week. I don't think I have anything else to say.

But everyone watch the Mormon Message "Daily Thanksgiving." And remember to be thankful!!

I forgot to say this, but it was raining so hard today!! I've never seen so much rain before!

Some times I am on the computer the same time as Sister Koenig, and we can converse a little few questions.  This was in response to the lesson and interview last week with Pres. Craig, "It went well. I finished teaching the restoration in 2;58! It was a miracle! And he and his wife are so nice."
Transfers were this week, so p-day was a day late.  The good news is that she will stay with Sister Lawrence for another transfer.  Sister Lawrence has been in Brunswick for three transfers already.  The bishop texted Greg, and said he lobbied for them to stay together.

On Saturday we went to the Bishop's house and his wife taught us how to flood cookies. So we made cookies for our investigators and helped her make cookies and cupcakes for church. Service can be so fun! President Craig wants us to do 5 hours of service a week, but lately we have been doing more than that!

In response to your e-mail: Melanie is Celeste's mom. And we are teaching Melanie's less active fiance Matt, Melanie, and Celeste tonight. We only had one investigator at church yesterday, Kasey, the little girl that got baptized yesterday. Her baptism was really good and Sis Lawrence and I did a musical number. The only bad part was that someone gave a 20 minute talk on the Holy Ghost. It went on FOREVER!!

I'm still really excited about teaching the Kason family. We taught them about the family proclamation and it went really well. At the end of the lesson, the dad, Blake, prayed for the first time. It was such a cool experience and the spirit was so strong!

Sister Cook-Owens is getting baptized on February 23! She is so excited! And her son Barry passed the sacrament for the first time yesterday. He loved it!

 I have gotten a lot of letters this week. I loved it! Keep em comin!

Transfers are the day before Thanksgiving. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that both Sister Lawrence and I will be able to stay here. I'm just getting to know people and we already have two dinner appointments on Thanksgiving with two really great families that I'm excited for. (Yes I'm going to get sooooooo fat :( ) Sister Lawrence has been her for three transfers. The weather is weird. Two days this last week we're FREEZING and rainy. Luckily, a ward member gave us a space heater to use. But today is hot and muggy and apparently supposed to be in the 80's. Crazy. We usually have two or three dinner appointments during the week. No one has fed us anything to different than what we eat back at home. We had some Georgia shrimp the other day and they were really good. People take us out to eat a lot. 

I absolutely need a cute floral dress from ASOS for Christmas and some short heels to wear to church would be nice too. And a rice pack. 

Exercising is good. We switch off running one day and then doing the workouts you sent the next day. We really like the ones you sent so keep sending more. It is so humid here that I come in after running dripping sweat...which is not normal for me. Also the humidity makes all of the letters I get soggy and if you leave gum out and not in the fridge it gets super sticky and gross. 

Zone conference was really good. President Craig told us that 49% of the mission is sister missionaries now.  Also, he said that in the past 6 weeks, there have been 1500 new investigators!! We also learned that we need to pray to be able to recognize how the spirit speaks to each of us, because it's different for everyone. Tomorrow we have interviews with Pres Craig and we have to teach him a three minute lesson from a pamphlet that he picks for us. I'm so nervous! It is so much material to cover in such a short amount of time!

This week we were able to find five new investigators! I'm not really sure how interested they really are yet, but I'm excited. There is one that I am really excited about. Her name is Lauren and she has a 6 year old named Allie. We knocked on their door one night and she told us that she went to a baptist church when she was younger but hasn't been to any church in a while. She connected really well with Sis Lawrence and I and we started talking about what they like to do and things like that. We found out that Allie does pageants, so I was asking if they ever watch the show Toddlers and Tiara's because I love it, and she started laughing and told me that Allie was on it last season!! Anyone that knows me knows how much I love that show and how exciting this is for me! Hahah It was really funny.  I can't wait to go back and teach them this week. 

We got to do a service project this week. It was the worst. We cleaned out a lady's trailer. It was so bad. Oh my gosh. I'm gagging thinking about it right now. There were cockroaches and she said that she just caught a rat in there the other day. She should have been on Hoarding: Buried Alive. In her bedroom, the floor of the trailer had fallen through and the only thing keeping us from falling to the ground was the carpet. It was so scary! I was vacuuming cobwebs off of the wall because everything was covered in dusty cobwebs and I went to vacuum cobwebs from behind a picture hanging on the wall and right when I lifted it up spiders started crawling out. I screamed so loud and dropped the vacuum and ran. It was traumatizing. 

Thanks again for the package and the book. Everyone should read "The power of everyday missionaries." I really like the quote in it that says "Every time you take someone by the hand and introduce him or her to Jesus Christ, you will feel how deeply our Savior loves you and loves the person whose hand is in yours." I've seen this in my life and I know how true it really is.

This week was pretty good. On Monday night we met with Celeste and Melanie again. They are so nice! They bought us candles, and soap from bath and body works to say thank you for teaching them and they gave us cookies! Probably two of the nicest people ever. I invited them both to be baptized on December first and Celeste said yes!!! Melanie said she has to talk to her fiance (who is an inactive member) first, but if he is okay with it then she will get baptized too. I'm so excited for them! 

This week we went on exchanges with the Sister Training leaders.  They aren't really teaching anyone so we just tracted... which isn't my favorite thing. But I did get to stay in their apartment. Sister Lawrence got the short end of the stick. Their place was so nice! It was a gated apartment, and they had carpet, and two bathrooms, a dishwasher, heater and a gym!! At least now I can have better stories to compare with Logan and Skye and let them know how I was roughing it... Oh and we found a giant cockroach in our shower last night. It was scary, but we killed it with bathroom cleaner. 

There are lots of nut trees here, so when we are out tracting we pick them up of the roads and take them with us to eat later. 

I don't remember if I told you about the Kason family, but they are a family of five that we are teaching. They are really sweet. This week we got to teach them the plan of salvation. They were so excited to hear that they can be together as a family FOREVER. It was really cool to see the reaction of people learning that for the first time. I guess sometimes I take the knowledge of the gospel that I have for granted, but after that experience I realized that I am so blessed to know what I know and so blessed to be out on a mission teaching people about the gospel that has blessed my life so much. 

We didn't have any investigators come to church yesterday. Not even one. It was so depressing! I wish they could just understand how important church is!!

Last night we made crepes with the Cook-Owens family. They loved them! Sister Cook-Owens found out that her husband gets out of prison in February, so she is planning on getting baptized a week after he gets out. Yay!!

Now to answer your questions: Sister Lawrence does facebook while I just go on Mormon.org and watch videos. I'll probably be a facebook missionary once I finish my 12 weeks of training. Collard greens are gross. The area here is reallyyyyyy spread out, so we drive everywhere, but sometimes we park a little ways from the houses so we can knock a few doors in the neighborhood. 

We have another zone conference tomorrow in Jacksonville. We have to leave at like 6:00 in the morning blehhhh.

Dad- I want to see a picture of your new car! And that's exciting that your the new YM president. 

I'm glad to hear that Shelly woke up. I've been praying for her every time I pray... And that's a lot of prayers! So i'm glad to hear they're working.

Who reads my blog? Can you please send me the squires email, the recipe for the orange drink, and my grey leggings please? or should I just buy some here? Thanks.
